Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio,76, was elected on Wednesday as the Catholic Church’s new Pope. The new pope took the name Francis and is the 266th pontiff of the church and the first Latin American to head the church at this level.

Pope Francis is the former archbishop of Buenos Aires and a member of the Jesuit, the biggest Roman Catholic order. He was born in Argentina, to parents of Italian descent. He is the first non-European pope for over a thousand years.
