Job Title: Trainer / Lecturer
 
Mildmay Uganda is an HIV/AIDS treatment and training centre also providing Health Systems Strengthening to scale up comprehensive HIV/AIDS Services in 16 districts of Central Uganda. Situated on Entebbe Road, Lweza, south of Kampala, Mildmay Uganda is seeking applications from experienced and motivated people interested in a rewarding career undertaking the challenging roles.
Job Summary: 
The job holder will be responsible for participating in the development, delivery and monitoring of relevant and evidence-based training and education programmes aimed at building capacity of health care providers to deliver quality care and support for people living with HIV and other emerging health issues. The incumbent will be expected to lead on one of the long programmes and teach and assess students on both long and short programme. The expected result is the delivery of high quality programmes (long courses) and attracting adequate numbers of students in Uganda and the region to sustain the programme.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Participate in the development of relevant and evidence-based curricula aimed at meeting the training needs of in-service and pre-service health and social care workers and to guarantee accreditation by national standard regulating bodies:
  • Carry out training needs identification, assessment and prioritization to ensure development of relevant and applicable programmes for improved service delivery
  • Conduct stakeholders meeting aimed at dissemination of findings from the various analyses and creating buy-in for the programmes
  • Work with the identified technical working groups to develop curricula ensuring that the cognitive, psychomotor and emotive dimensions of learning are captured and that identified learning needs are well-addressed
  • Review developed curricula to ensure that they meet the required standards for the different levels and seek consensus on curriculum documentation and submission to recognized standards regulatory body for accreditation.
  • Take lead of teams to pilot curricula and make the necessary adaptations.
  • Continuously monitor curricula and document any areas that may need review
  • Work with teams to update curricula as required by the various accrediting bodies.
2. Equip participants with targeted competencies (Knowledge, Attitudes and Skills) needed to provide quality health and social care services in line with developed and approved curricula:
  • Lead teams to review various sections of curricula and develop appropriate time-tables ensuring that all learning outcomes for the particular course or unit are captured
  • Prepare lesson plans for the various sessions ensuring that key content areas for achieving the intended learning outcomes are captured and that appropriate learning methodology is used
  • Take lead in the development and updating of learning content ensuring it is in line with current evidence and ministry of health guidelines and work with administrative officer to prepare course handbooks
  • Prepare necessary teaching aids (both visual and audio) including training equipment to enhance participants’ acquisition of the desired knowledge, skills and attitude and for improved application of theory to practice.
  • Basing on the lesson plan, utilise appropriate adult learning methodology to deliver sessions
  • Receive feed-back from participants and course coordinators and support lecturers to address identified areas of weakness growth and enhanced facilitation skills relevant to adult learners
  • Stay up to date in clinical practice by working for an agreed number of days in the Mildmay Uganda clinic
  • Stay up to date in teaching and learning by undertaking personal reading, participating in peer reviews and staff development workshops organized in the directorate.
  • Work with the research department to undertake research on identified areas within training and education
3. Take a lead in marking of students’ assignments, ensuring that set guidelines and time-lines are adhered to:
  • Receive scripts from the administrative assistant, ensuring anonymity of the students for fairness and objectivity.
  • Assign specific markers to mark particular assignments for first, second marking and/or moderation.
  • Review/familiarize self with the assignment guidelines to ensure critical understanding of the assignment for an objective view point.
  • Carry out timely first marking, second marking and/or moderation of the given assignment as per the set guidelines to ensure consistency and comprehensiveness.
  • Send scripts and feedback sheets to external examiner for scrutiny and receive external examiner’s report with details about the scrutiny process.
  • Send written feedback and awarded provisional marks to administrative assistant for timely dissemination to students to ensure appropriate incorporation of feedback points in the next assignment.
  • Actively participate in organizing the examination board meeting with the relevant staff for ratification of all the provisional course unit marks.
  • Release of the final course unit marks.
4. Conduct mentorship and supervision of students on T&E programmes to ensure application of relevant theory to practice and professional growth:
  • Maintain a data base of mentors with the required skills and attitudes mix to effectively support students
  • Organise meetings with new mentors to orient them on the course and their role as mentors for the programme
  • Assign students to specific mentors
  • Circulate mentorship packs, student lists and course unit content outline and assignment guidelines to all mentors to inform their mentorship/supervision process.
  • Plan student/mentor meetings that are convenient and appropriate for both parties to complement class-room sessions with practical support
  • Offer guidance, counselling, tutorial support and coaching to the assigned students for enhancement of their practical skills in offering quality health or social care services to their clients
  • Visit students’ practicum/placement sites to assess their practice and to offer relevant support aimed at enhancing professional skills
  • Write practicum assessment reports, share with external examiner for dissemination to students as part of the overall course unit marks.
5. Coordinate short and long courses aiming to ensure that they are delivered to the highest standards possible, participants achieve the intended learning out-comes, and that they enjoy their stay at Mildmay Uganda or any other venue used:
  • Prepare, plan and design relevant training sessions, appropriate to a set group of participants and intended learning outcomes
  • Liaise with the Registrar and Administrative office to identify and invite appropriate participants ensuring that the right people are admitted for the training.
  • Identify and notify facilitators for timely submission of relevant and updated visual and audio learning materials required for compiling the participants’ reference base
  • Proof read materials submitted ensuring that they are up-to-date and in line with current evidence and ministry of health policies
  • Communicate to all the stakeholders involved in the training for participation and buy-in
  • Monitor the smooth running of the training ensuring that participants’ achieve the intended learning outcomes and that any issues are addressed in time to minimise impact on training
  • Conduct both participants’ and trainers’ evaluations of the training and write a comprehensive report highlighting the relevant learning points, challenges and recommendations for future improvements.
  • Work with partners to plan for follow up of the trainees to support application of theory to practice and to identify any gaps that may need further training and mentorship
6: Contribute to marketing of MUg training programmes in order to improve on MUg visibility (positioning, branding) and income generation:
  • Ensure client satisfaction through delivery of high quality programmes and demonstrating a high level of professionalism in dealing with students and partners.
  • Contribute to designing and circulation of brochures by providing information on the courses and reviewing the drafts developed by the librarian/registrar
  • Participate in writing training and funding proposals in order to increase on income generation
  • Participate in consultancy activities ensuring that they are completed in time and delivered to the highest standard possible for customer satisfaction
  • Actively identify opportunities for marketing MUg courses and attend partner meetings/conferences to make presentations, and circulate brochures to improve on MUg’s visibility.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The ideal candidate should possess a Masters’ degree in a health or social care related profession
  • Current registration with a relevant professional body
  • Additional training in palliative care is an added advantage
  • At least two years’ teaching experience
  • Experience/knowledge of HIV and/or other chronic illnesses
  • Ability to mentor and supervise students on both cognitive and practical skills
  • Knowledge of current WHO and MOH guidelines
  • Possess the ability to network and liaise with various partners
  • Excellent communication skills (Oral & written)
