Marie Stopes Uganda (MSU) is a marketing-focused, results-oriented social business that uses modern management and marketing techniques to provide family planning and reproductive healthcare across every district of Uganda. We aim to save and improve thousands of Ugandan lives through innovative and sustainable models. MSU is a leading player in Sexual and Reproductive Health sector in Uganda, having a 25% of the market share in modern contraceptives and, in 2010/2011, safely delivered 50,000 babies. MSU is part of a global network of Marie Stopes International (MSI), and subscribes to MSI goal and mission, to prevent unwanted births and to ensure individual’s rights to Children by Choice not Chance.

MSU is currently running and seeking to revamp its Commercial Division, that aims at using Business approaches and principles to create a sustainable means of assuring continued provision of affordable, high quality, lifesaving Services and products. The commercial Division currently socially Markets; Life Guard Condoms and a series of pharmaceutical products and also operates a network of 15 private Clinics across the country.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Leadership of the commercial Division;
  • Improve and put in place robust Systems and processes to support Operations of the commercial Division.
  • Responsible for continuous analysis of business potential in Uganda for current Pharma and non-Pharma product lines, clinics operations.
  • Develop the commercial division strategic plans; including opportunity analysis, gaps, and growth trends.
  • Lead in the new business Development for the Commercial Division; introducing new Product lines and revamping the old ones.
  • Deliver strong leadership, including recruitment, performance management, training and development.
  • Work with Human Resources to ensure compliance with all MSU policies and procedures.
  • Streamline operations such as inventory management, team structure.
  • Sit on the Executive Team of Marie Stopes Uganda
2. Profitability and Sustainability of the Division;
  • Responsible for profitable forecasting, development and implementation of annual budget.
  • Work with the National Sales and Marketing Mangers to develop new products, including premium condom brands and other products, rebrand current product lines, and explore new product lines to import and sell.
  • Improve and put in place approaches and techniques that increase revenue generation for the Pharma, Non pharma products and Services provided under the Clinics.
  • Use commercial business and marketing techniques to develop and implement successful strategies to increase MSU market share, profitability and brand recognition for current portfolio.
  • Ensuring routine market research to provide information on pricing and competitor analysis.
  • Leverage information technology to deliver our commercial targets, and use data for analysis to improve strategy, planning and productivity.
  • Advance and implement an effective rewards and incentive scheme for the Commercial Division team.
3. Lead and improve the Social Marketing sector of the Commercial Division;
  • Build a competitive social marketing programme.
  • Putting in place systems and models for up to date innovative social Marketing models,
  • Recruit and retain the talented, skilled and experienced staff under Social Marketing.
4. Clinical Standards and Client Care:
  • Ensure that high quality standards are maintained, ensuring client satisfaction achieved is achieved.
  • Work with the Medical Development Team to ensure that the clinics receive regular clinical quality assurance, supervision, training and strict adherence to Clinical protocols
  • Ensure that ensure that the rights and needs of clients are given priority.
5. Strategic leadership of Social Marketing and Medical Clinics:
  • Revive the condom social marketing programme to into the leading private condom distributor (CSO) in the country.
  • Ensuring that the social marketing programme is evidence based, learning from operational research to match activities with the best possible outcomes and inform future marketing and distribution strategies.
6. Leadership of MSU as EMT Member:
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of MSU
  • Take ownership with other Directors for the implementation of the MSU Strategic Plan and Business Plan
  • Identify best-practice, innovations and integration with other MSU service delivery channels and support functions to increase access to high-quality services. Ensuring that the programme is evidence based, learning from operational research to match activities with the best possible outcomes.
  • Active member of the EMT and SMT
  • Work with line reports to develop a good team spirit, based on MSU core values, within the Department and teams, including team members in the field.
  • Build and maintain excellent relations with donors and stakeholders including MSI, USAID, DFID and the MoH.
  • Provide leadership to the Private Sector Partnerships team, by ensuring the successful and proper execution of recruitment, training, induction, appraisal and motivation of all team members, in liaison with corporate services directorate (People and Development Manager).
  • Provide mentorship to MSU staff to develop skills and performance
7. External Relations, Advocacy and Resource Development:
  • Develop and network with potential partners and external stakeholders (such as Ministry of Health, UNFPA, National Drug Authority, National Medical Stores, Joint Medical Store) representing MSU in a professional and appropriate manner in line with MSU mission and values at all times.
  • Explore opportunities for MSU to expand its commercial division internationally.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The candidate should possess an educational background in business management and/or a pharmacist/doctor with demonstrated entrepreneurial experience in pharmaceutical sales and marketing, new business development.
  • Candidates with additional experience in OTC or consumer marketing and sales will be preferred.
  • Excellent track record of financial management, ability to manage a budget and P&L.
  • At least seven years progressive work-experience, including evidence of leadership roles.
  • Good understanding of business and sales within the context of healthcare settings and/or programmes.
  • Demonstrated ability to increase year on year sales and expand product portfolio.
  • Outstanding oral (presentation) and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective strategic plans and marketing strategies (new business development)
  • Strong people management skills (ability to manage and motivate teams to achieve results)
  • Highly numerate – 5 years of budget management responsibility.
  • Language skills – fluent written and spoken English
  • Highly analytical, with the ability to manage and prioritize a demanding work load in deadline driven/results oriented atmosphere.
  • Knowledge of sexual and reproductive health
  • Has a complete understanding of the in-licensing requirements for Uganda.
