When Makerere university students dress in red gowns, the vendors know it better and prepare for the effects of the cough; yes, call it a strike. Because Vendors feel the cold, more than Prof. Ddumba feels it even though the pressure on him is beyond his control sometimes.

The students this morning kicked off with a demonstration against the university policies.

They stormed the administration block and the Freedom Square demanding for the immediate scrap of the 10% tuition increment recently passed by the university council and return of meals at the university halls of residence.

They also want the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ddumba Sentamu out of office if he has failed to run Makerere university in the interest of the future generation of this country.

Ivan Bwowe, Makerere university Guild President sounded the warning last week of a possible demonstration if the students concerns in question were not solved on.

In a document issued last week and termed “The Students Have Spoken”, Bwowe noted that the strike is aimed at “Freeing the Great Ivory Tower from the Filthy jaws of the mafia.”

However, Ritah Namisango, PRO Makerere university said the decision to increase fees by 10% was taken by Makerere university, the supreme governing body of the institution.

Adding that Prof. John Ddumba-Ssentamu and Management are just implementing the Council’s decisions.

The Makerere University Council chaired by Eng. Dr. Charles Wana Etyem resolved to increase tuition fees by 10% to new students expected to report next month on 16th.

They are also going to implement a new policy where all resident students in the university halls under the government sponsorship scheme will be given 4,000 shillings for meals per day.

Concerned students say this won’t be enough for meals (Lunch and Dinner).
