Busoga University to Reopen in August 2025 After Verification of Assets

Busoga University is set to reopen in August 2025 following a government-led verification of the university’s assets, marking a major step in its revival.

On Monday, the Ministry of Education and Sports, led by Assistant Commissioner Ochira John Pakony, conducted a physical verification of university assets, including buildings, vehicles, and furniture. Former university executives officially handed over the keys to the Ministry, which will transfer them to the Auditor General before renovations begin. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) will take charge of refurbishing the institution.

Ochira urged former staff to remain patient as the Public Service finalizes recruitment and academic paper verification. “Those who qualify will be given vacancies as university staff,” he assured. He also called for unity among the people of Busoga to ensure a smooth reopening.

The government has already paid UGX 15.2 billion for the university’s revival and allocated an additional UGX 7.2 billion to settle outstanding assets and liabilities.

Hon. Milton Muwuma, the Kigulu South MP, applauded the government’s efforts to restore the university and encouraged parents and students to take advantage of the institution. “Studying locally will help cut the high costs of living away from home,” he noted.

Edward Gamuwa, former Chairperson of the Board of Governors, called on former staff to cooperate with the government during the verification process. He also appealed for their reinstatement in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the government.

Board member Kayemba Patrick welcomed the university’s revival and urged the local community to support the project by contributing materials such as bricks and sand instead of sourcing from outside the region.

Several dignitaries attended the event, including Iganga RDC Wadera Sadara, his deputy, Iganga LCV Chairman Gabula Ezra, former university staff, and well-wishers.
