Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has urged university graduates to embrace creativity, innovation, and self-reliance in addressing Uganda’s unemployment challenges.
Speaking at Nkumba University’s 27th graduation ceremony on Saturday, Tayebwa encouraged the 2,087 graduates to leverage government programmes and funding opportunities to develop income-generating ventures instead of waiting for white-collar jobs.
“Uganda needs leaders who can innovate solutions to existing social and economic challenges,” Tayebwa said. “What lies ahead is the responsibility to use the knowledge, skills, and values you have gained here to transform your lives and those of the people around you. In an age of global disruption and innovation, your generation must be agile, creative, and proactive.”

The Deputy Speaker applauded Nkumba University’s new digitally-enabled early childhood education project, which aims to equip teachers from 32 primary schools across Uganda with e-learning skills.
“This is truly the way forward,” he said. “The only way we can help young learners quickly embrace the digital age is by introducing them to technology early on. I request you, graduates, to go and replicate this in your communities.”
Tayebwa also commended private universities for their contribution to expanding access to higher education.
“Universities like Nkumba have played a critical role in democratizing the education sector. If we had only remained with government institutions, I do not know where all the students from our secondary schools would be admitted,” he said.
Chancellor Emmanuel Katongole urged graduates to embody confidence, competence, creativity, and character in their professional and personal lives.
“As Chancellor, I have conferred upon you your awards, but remember, your real graduation begins tomorrow,” Katongole said. “Degrees may open doors, but it is these four virtues that will keep those doors open and allow you to walk through them with dignity and purpose.”
Vice Chancellor Prof. Jude Lubega expressed gratitude to the government for waiving Shs4.4 billion in tax arrears and providing a Shs300 million capitalization grant to support infrastructure development.
He further appealed for government assistance in establishing artificial intelligence and data science laboratories in the university’s new ICT Centre of Excellence.
Nkumba University’s 27th graduation ceremony saw 25 students awarded PhDs, 418 Masters degrees, 1,025 Bachelor’s degrees, 217 postgraduate diplomas, 263 undergraduate diplomas, and 139 certificates.
