Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of Information, Communication Technology, and National Guidance, has been installed as the second Chancellor of Great Lakes University in Kanungu District. His installation took place during the university’s tenth graduation ceremony, where he pledged to work towards the institution’s growth and development.
“I am honored to take on this role and will do my best to support the university’s vision and ensure academic excellence,” Baryomunsi said.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, who presided over the event, praised Baryomunsi’s leadership and influence.
“I do not think there is a door in this country that Dr. Baryomunsi can knock on and be turned away. He is very strict on quality and will ensure compliance with the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) requirements,” Tayebwa stated.
Calls for Government Support to Private Universities
During the ceremony, University Director Olivia Tumuhirwe Arinaitwe appealed to the government to exempt private universities from taxation to ease their financial burden. She also requested that private institutions be allowed to share facilities such as science laboratories in public universities.
Rev. Fr. Abel Bainomugisha, the university’s Executive Director, emphasized the need for expansion, revealing that the institution requires over Shs2 billion to construct a building for engineering and technology departments, as well as science laboratories.
“We are committed to aligning our programs with government policies on higher education, but we need support to improve our infrastructure,” Bainomugisha said.
Tayebwa Warns Against Sectarianism
During his speech, Tayebwa also cautioned Ugandans against sectarianism in politics, warning that divisions based on religion hinder development and effective leadership.
“We, the Banyakigezi, face a challenge that we often try to conceal—sectarianism in politics. When it comes to voting, many of us tend to choose candidates based on their religion, as if such division will somehow lead to improvements in infrastructure such as roads and water supply,” he said.
He urged young people to reject divisive politics and focus on unity for national development.
A total of 110 students graduated in various disciplines during the ceremony.
