The General Court Martial (GCM) has granted bail to Robert Kyagulanyi’s singing partner Ali Bukeni also known as Nubian Li, his bodyguard Eddy Ssebufu alias Eddie Mutwe, producer Daniel Brenny Oyerwot alias Dan Magic and 15 others NUP supporters .
The Court chairman, Lt. Gen Andrew Gutti, released each person on a non-cash bail of sh20m.
“They had a right to bail and had spent a long time on remand” Lt. Gen Gutti said.
Eddie Mutwe, Nubian Li and Dan Magic have spent six months on remand following their arrest on December 30, 2020 in Kalangala where they had accompanied the National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Mr Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, on a campaign trail.
They were detained at the Makindye Military barrack for days before they were arraigned in the army court where they were charged afresh and remanded to Kitalya prison.
“After listening to submissions for both counsels, for the applicant and respondent, this court has deliberated on this application and rules as follows; applicants have spent long on remand, in the result, this court finds merit in the application and hereby grants bail to the applicants on the following terms;” Lt Gen Gutti ruled.
The suspects are accused of unlawful possession of ammunition contrary to the Firearms Act. However, they deny any wrong doing.
Prosecution at the Army Court alleges that on January 3, 2021 while at Makerere- Kavule, Kiggundu Zone in Kawempe Division, Kampala, the group was found in possession of four rounds of live ammunition of AK47 which are ordinarily a monopoly of the defence forces.
