When Mathias Twinomugisha first walked through the gates of Kampala International University (KIU), he carried with him a dream—to become a compassionate and competent health professional.

As he prepares to graduate on Saturday, July 26, 2025, with a Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Medicine and Community Health, Twinomugisha looks back on a transformative journey marked by leadership, service, and resilience.

Twinomugisha chose KIU not just for its status as Uganda’s top private university but also because of the reputation of its teaching hospital, considered among the best in East Africa.

Encouraged by a friend already enrolled at KIU, he took a leap that would shape his future in profound ways.

One of the defining moments in his academic life was meeting Dr. Emmanuel Mutuuza, whose teachings went beyond textbooks. “This encounter fundamentally changed how I view my role and responsibilities, both inside and outside the classroom,” Twinomugisha shared. Dr. Mutuuza instilled in him the values of ethical conduct, professional appearance, and respectful communication—principles Twinomugisha now holds close as he enters the medical field.

Beyond academics, Twinomugisha immersed himself in campus life. He served in multiple roles: Class Representative, Health Minister, Team Manager for the Himers Football Team, and Church Leader at St. Camillus Catholic Chaplaincy. These experiences, he said, “allowed me to develop leadership, teamwork, and organizational skills crucial for my future in healthcare.”

Sports were also a big part of his experience. He fondly recalls cheering during intra-school football matches and inter-faculty games. “The energy on the field, the roar of the crowd, and the pure joy of a well-played game, win or lose, were unforgettable,” he said.

Like many students, Twinomugisha faced his share of challenges, the toughest being balancing intense coursework with personal wellness. “I overcame this by implementing strict time management, leveraging peer study groups, and consciously prioritizing rest and self-care,” he said. Through this, he developed a sustainable work ethic and a deeper appreciation for mental health.

As KIU marks its 25th anniversary, Twinomugisha expressed gratitude to the university’s administration, staff, and alumni for building an institution that promotes critical thinking and resilience. He attributes much of his growth to the environment they helped create.

To continuing students, he offers a message of encouragement:
“Embrace every moment of this challenging yet rewarding journey. You are building resilience and knowledge with every late night and complex concept. Lean on your peers—your greatest support system. Seek out your mentors, learning from their wisdom and passion. Keep pushing with purpose and integrity. The finish line will arrive, and you will be immensely proud.”

As Twinomugisha steps into the next chapter of his life, he leaves behind a legacy of purpose, perseverance, and service—a true reflection of the values KIU aims to instill in every graduate.
