Government restores Internet and Social Media services

The government of Uganda has today 10th February 2021 permitted social media access to the public except for Facebook.

“Internet and Social media services have been fully restored. We apologize for the inconveniences caused, but it was for the security of our country. Let’s be constructive, NOT destructive consumers/users of social media.” State Minister for ICT, Hon Peter Ogwang posted on twitter.

This comes after a 28-day ban whereby many Ugandans were forced to use Virtual Private Networks (aka VPNs)  to get access to their social media accounts.

The government, through the communications sector regulator, Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), had blocked the Internet citing security concerns in the country.
