Gulu University Graduates Over 1,500 Students

Gulu University graduated more than 1,500 students across various disciplines during its 20th graduation ceremony on Friday 24^th January, 2025.

The ceremony saw Okwir Kizito, a Bachelor of Business Administration graduate, emerge as the best male student with a CGPA of 4.83. Ayaa Susan Safira, a Bachelor of Secretarial and Administrative Studies graduate, was named the best female student, achieving a CGPA of 4.67.

Chancellor Rt. Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda commended the university for maintaining high academic standards and remaining relevant in its educational offerings.

“Gulu University recognizes university education as an important cornerstone in achieving Vision 2040 and the National Development Plan IV,” Rugunda emphasized, stressing the need to produce skilled human resources to drive a knowledge-based economy.

Gulu University Council Chairperson Mary Theresa Obbo congratulated the graduates and urged them to utilize their knowledge responsibly. “I congratulate Council members, Senate, Management, and students for their commitment to knowledge and innovation,” Obbo said, urging moral and patriotic use of their acquired knowledge.

Vice Chancellor Prof. George Ladaah Openjuru highlighted a notable increase in PhD graduations from three in the previous ceremony to four in the 20th. The overall number of graduates also rose from 1,358 to 1,569, representing a 16% increase.

In a speech read by State Minister for Primary Education Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, President Yoweri Museveni urged universities to prioritize practical knowledge and skills development to equip graduates for employment and wealth creation.

“Universities in Uganda and Africa should not merely impart knowledge but focus on teaching and learning to catch up with the rest of the world,” the President emphasized.

President Museveni also lauded Vice Chancellor Openjuru, describing him as “one of the best educationists in Africa,” as voted in 2023.
