Standard Chartered PLC is a British multinational banking and financial services company headquartered in Hong Kong, China. Standard Chartered Bank Uganda is the longest established international bank in the country; the first branch was opened in August 1912. We had 11 branches up to 1972 and retained only one branch during the turbulence of the 70s. In 1998 we acquired 4 branches of former Cooperative Bank in November 1999. Standard Chartered Bank Uganda today has a network of 11 branches in Kampala, Jinja, Mbale, Mbarara and Gulu. Standard Chartered Bank Uganda has 29 ATMs and over 600 staff.

Job Summary: The Standard Chartered Bank Head, Human Resources will be responsible for driving bottom-line business performance through creating an effective, efficient organisation where maximising engaging employees is at the heart of every interaction. He / she will also act as a catalyst, stimulating high engagement through great manager behaviours – including appropriate configuration of people product and processes – which ensure employee needs are satisfied and managers and employees are playing to their strengths live the commitments of our Here for good brand promise, acting as a role-model for others. Relentlessly focus our people on the Bank’s values and the behaviours associated with upholding them. The primary areas of responsibility would include Corporate & Institutional Clients, Commercial Clients, Retail Clients and Support Functions covering the Uganda Business Unit. The role holder would be expected to agree and implement a Strategic People Agenda (SPA) for their areas of responsibility ensuring this is aligned to the business/functional strategy, global SPA, EA Cluster & Regional Priorities and the HR Collective Agenda

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and secure agreement to a Strategic People Agenda for the Country which is aligned to the Global CIC/CC/RC/Functions strategy thereby driving performance through organisation design and a continued focus on the factors which drive engagement
  • Assist the Country CEO and ExCo in configuring and deploying Group people policies, products and processes to drive engagement thereby driving business performance
  • Proactively coach the Country CEOs and ExCo within their area of responsibility both as a team and as individuals to drive business performance through high engagement
  • Make sure that there is a robust talent pipeline to meet the future needs of the Country through managers identifying developing and appropriately stretching talent at every level
  • Collaborate with the EA Head of HR and Business HR teams on all people related matters for Senior CIC/CC/RC/Functions in the cluster. Ensure HRBPs support and collaborate with BHR teams on products e.g. P3/My Voice/Talent Management to agree stakeholder engagement, drive functional strategies, processes and messages at the Regional level.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across HR (including specialists and HRSSC) to ensure continuous improvement in the function
  • Continuously review the Region operating model for alignment to the business strategies using all available data to assess effectiveness and demonstrate pro-activity in surfacing and securing resolution to points of misalignment
  • Continuously review the country operating model for its cost efficiency and demonstrate proactively in surfacing and securing improvements
  • Proactively form relationships & influence the people related agendas of regulators & government related organisations within country to ensure SCB’s interests are represented
  • Serve as a Line manager of the HRBPs CIC/CC/RC/Functions ensuring all aspects of the performance management process are adhered to and driving high engagement for their team 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must possess significant experience of being an HR Business Partner at senior country level
  • Good knowledge and understanding of CIC/CC/RC/Functions including key products, key roles, Target Operating Model and Strategic Agenda
  • Possess the ability to understand financials (e.g. interpreting financial statements, budgeting, project accounting)
  • Past exposure and experience of organisational development (including use of consulting tools and change models)
  • Ability to create a Strategic People Agenda with success measures
  • Understanding of the various HR products and how to implement them within a country (e.g. engagement, performance management)
  • Understanding and practical experience of managing Employee Relations activities and relationships with regulators and government related agencies
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the latest HR trends, best practices and how to successfully apply them
  • Uses knowledge, communication and relationship skills to positively influence key business decisions
  • Forms effective relationships with key Stakeholders across the matrix
  • Ability to stand up for what is right, in the face of adversity
  • Excellent communication : clear oral and written skills; effective questioning and active listening
  • Possess advanced facilitation skills at an individual and team levels
  • Significant coaching at an individual and leadership level
  • Gains followership and commitment through confident and courageous influencing
  • Ability to lead and engage a high performing team as well as performance manage
