The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has officially received a newly completed Faculty of Engineering and Technology and a 500-bed student hostel at its main campus in Mbale.

The handover took place on June 12, 2025, marking a major milestone in the university’s expansion into technical and scientific education.

Constructed by Vcon Construction with Symbion Consulting as technical partners, the project was financed through a $13.5 million loan from the Islamic Development Bank, guaranteed by the Government of Uganda. It aligns with national priorities in agriculture, technology, mining, tourism, and innovation.

Assoc. Prof. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, the Rector of IUIU, said the facility will host the university’s ninth faculty and offer professional programs in civil, mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering.

He confirmed that accreditation is underway and that the first intake of engineering students is expected by August 2026.

“This is a key milestone in our mission to transform IUIU into a regional center for scientific and technological innovation,” Prof. Gyagenda stated. “We are committed to delivering quality education and research to students from over 25 countries.”

Uganda’s Ambassador to Türkiye, Nusura Tiperu, praised the project for aligning with the government’s focus on “ATMs”—Agriculture, Technology and Innovation, and Mining. “Commissioning this Engineering and Technology block fulfills one of the government’s priorities,” she said, adding that the facility features state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories.

The new facilities are part of IUIU’s long-term master plan spanning 300 acres. Future developments include faculties of law, medicine, and hospitality, alongside a stadium, shopping complex, and dedicated green zones. The university is also partnering with Turkish institutions to enhance lecturer training and support for Uganda’s growing tourism sector.
