The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has partnered with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) to train its research coordinators in intellectual property (IP) management, with the goal of enhancing research output and commercialization of innovations.
The two-day Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop took place from May 15 to 16, 2025, at IUIU’s main campus in Mbale. It was organized by the university’s Directorate of Research, Publication, and Innovation.
The workshop focused on equipping coordinators with practical knowledge on patenting, protecting, and commercializing academic research and inventions.
Dr. Gyagenda AbduSwamad, Deputy Director of the Directorate, described the training as a critical step in improving research productivity at the university.
“We believe this training is timely. It will help our coordinators understand the relevance of patents and commercialization, which in turn will benefit both our staff and students,” he said.
Facilitators from URSB, led by Mr. Lumu Bob Rogers, a senior officer in charge of the Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) Programme, delivered the sessions.
“This programme, supported by the World Intellectual Property Organisation, provides access to high-quality technology information to improve the quality of research in developing countries,” Mr. Lumu said.
He added that the training aims to empower coordinators to guide researchers and students in generating credible innovations that can gain market value and contribute to national development.
The initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening the university’s innovation capacity and aligning its academic efforts with Uganda’s broader economic goals.
