Kabale University and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are finalizing preparations for the launch of a modern Business Incubation Centre aimed at fostering youth-led innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation in the Kigezi region.
The facility, expected to open in October 2025, is part of the “Fostering Innovation Ecosystems in Uganda’s Public Universities” initiative spearheaded by UNDP. It is designed to support students in transforming ideas into sustainable enterprises.
In 2023, UNDP and Kabale University signed a partnership agreement to operationalize the incubation hub. The center is now in its final preparatory phase.
On a recent visit to the university, UNDP Uganda’s Head of Exploration and Programme Analyst, Mr. Nathan Tumuhamye, and Procurement Associate, Mr. Guma Richard, inspected the facility alongside university officials and potential service providers.
Dr. Byamukama Willbroad, a Lecturer in Agricultural Science and the university’s lead coordinator for the project, guided the team through the site. He praised UNDP’s support and emphasized the center’s importance in equipping students with entrepreneurial skills.
“This hub will provide our students with the tools they need to build real-world solutions and start businesses before they graduate,” he said.
Mr. Tumuhamye stressed the need to make the space both innovative and culturally grounded.
“This space must reflect the vibrancy of the Kigezi region, its culture, nature, and spirit—while also signaling a forward-looking vision driven by technology and artificial intelligence,” he said.
“We are not just building a facility. We are creating a launchpad for ideas that will shape the future of our youth and our nation.”
The incubation hub will feature co-working spaces, mentorship, investor networks, intellectual property services, and commercial support for student innovations. Service providers were urged to incorporate local design elements and propose creative, context-aware interior concepts to inspire innovation.
The new center will complement Kabale University’s existing ICT Innovation Hub, reinforcing the university’s role as a regional hub for innovation and inclusive development.
To meet the October 2025 launch timeline, service providers are required to submit their proposals promptly to allow for timely procurement and implementation.
The project reflects UNDP’s broader commitment to unlocking youth potential and strengthening innovation ecosystems in higher education institutions across Uganda.
