Makerere suspended students petition court

Four Makerere University students who were suspended by the university authorities over their involvement is demonstrations have petitioned court.

The students through Lukwago and Company Advocates filed an application demanding a judicial review of the disciplinary committee’s decision.

The university Students Affairs and Disciplinary Committee on February 21 suspended Ivan Bwowe, a Second year Law student, Samuel Mukili of B. Industrial and Fine Art, Bala Bwiruka David and Mutagobwa Geoffrey both pursuing B. Arts in Social Sciences for allegedly leading strikes against the new fees policy.

The policy that was greatly opposed in the last two months requires a student to pay 60% of the total tuition fees in the first six weeks from the start of a semester.

The university has not yet responded on the allegations but the suspended students claim the committee’s decision was based on bias and did not give them a fair hearing and yet this could result into their indefinite expulsion from the university.
