A delegation from the MasterCard Foundation has applauded Busitema University for its strides in digital education, following a one-day monitoring visit aimed at assessing the institution’s e-learning initiatives.

During the visit, the team met academic leaders, staff, and students to evaluate how MasterCard-supported projects are improving access to digital learning tools and preparing students for the modern workforce.

Prof. Paul Waako, the Vice Chancellor of Busitema University, revealed that the university is developing an online entrepreneurship course, set to replace the traditional module. He said the new course will be reflected on student transcripts and will enhance the relevance of academic programs.

Prof. Waako also praised the university’s adoption of electronic voting during its recent Guild elections, describing it as a step toward “transparency and efficiency in student leadership.”

Prof. Jessica Aguti, Coordinator of the Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) program, highlighted that 51 courses now include online components. She emphasized the program’s alignment with Uganda’s National Development Plan III and preparations for NDP IV. She noted that digital learning has been especially beneficial for students with disabilities and reported growing interest from academic staff in digital teaching methods.

The MasterCard Foundation team, accompanied by Mr. Charles Ekanya, leader of the Cyber School project, underscored the Foundation’s commitment to creating opportunities for marginalized communities. Since 2006, the Foundation has supported over 30 million young people across Africa in sectors like agriculture, business, and technology.

A major focus of the visit was Busitema University’s plan to establish a Disability Resource Centre. The proposed facility will support the university’s 42 students identified as having special needs and is backed by the University Council. The university is now seeking development partners to advance the initiative.

The delegation concluded the visit with a tour of the Online Learning Studio at Nagongera Campus, where digital course content is produced under the ODeL program.

The visit reaffirmed both the university’s and the Foundation’s shared goal of strengthening digital learning, expanding inclusive education, and building resilient institutions across Africa.
