Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) on Tuesday hosted a delegation from the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to assess its progress on gender equity and inclusion across all academic and administrative functions.
The meeting, held at MMU’s main campus in Fort Portal, focused on aligning the university’s policies and practices with the National Policy Framework on gender equality in higher education.
The NCHE team, led by Dr. Godfrey Omoda Onyait, Principal Higher Education Officer, reviewed MMU’s gender inclusion efforts through a structured audit covering twelve key areas, including student enrolment, leadership, scholarships, infrastructure, curriculum, and research.
Dr. Onyait commended MMU’s proactive approach to gender equity. “Universities play a crucial role in transforming societal attitudes toward gender equality,” he said. “MMU’s willingness to engage in this comprehensive review demonstrates institutional leadership that will benefit not only the university community but society at large.”
MMU’s Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, Prof. John M. Kasenene, represented the Vice Chancellor during the visit. He affirmed the university’s commitment to inclusive education.
“MMU is 80 percent compliant to gender issues through its policies, curricula and provision of opportunities, including having a comprehensive gender policy,” said Prof. Kasenene. “Gender equity is not merely a policy requirement but a fundamental principle that enriches our academic community.”
The NCHE audit included an evaluation of gender-related facilities and implementation practices. It also involved feedback from university administrators and academic staff.
Key participants from MMU included Academic Registrar Grace K. Nyakahuma, University Counsellor Gorret Kugonza, Principal Academic Registrar Wilson Kwikiriza, Principal Accountant Simon Oala, Dr. Hadija Nansamba from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Dr. Sheila Nanyanzi, among other senior officials.
The audit is part of a national effort to institutionalize gender equity in higher education and ensure universities create supportive environments for all learners and staff.
