Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) has received official accreditation for its first Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme in Agro-Ecological Sciences, marking a historic milestone in its academic journey.

The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) approved the programme during its 79th meeting held on April 25, 2025. This move positions MMU as a key player in advancing research and innovation in sustainable agriculture in Uganda and the East African region.

MMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Pius Coxwell Achanga welcomed the development, describing it as a landmark achievement for the institution. “This milestone reflects our growing academic excellence and the tireless efforts of our university leadership and faculty,” Prof. Achanga said.

The PhD in Agro-Ecological Sciences is structured to produce experts in sustainable agriculture, ecosystem management, and resilient food systems. The programme will equip scholars with advanced, interdisciplinary knowledge to tackle agricultural and environmental challenges.

Located in Fort Portal, MMU has built a reputation for community-focused research and education. The university’s emphasis on sustainable development has shaped its academic offerings and strategic vision.

In addition to the PhD programme, NCHE also accredited four other academic programmes at MMU. These include a Bachelor of Science in Public Health, a Diploma in Computer Science, and two Higher Education Access Programmes in Biological and Physical Sciences.

The expansion reflects MMU’s commitment to broadening access to quality higher education and meeting the evolving needs of learners across Uganda.
