Imagining she is talking about sheet…as in sheets… But somehow it couldn’t connect with the course. Only to realise later that she meant a paper with the cut off points. You see today I was coming from the law school at Makerere university when I met a kid of these days-the dot com fellow. I came across one of these young girls trying to secure a place at Makerere.

She had ear phones on, she had kugalawo (Closed off the ears). You know how they dress, She flashed her Galaxy phone…but don’t ask me the model because I have never owned one.

Anyway…she stops and says, ‘Hey dude,’ . I stop with hesitation… Very few girls will use that word for a person they don’t know…I immediately knew this was not an old school girl so I was also like ‘Ya?

She goes, “I’m looking for this course shit’ Yiiii”

Being the old man at campus, I stared for a while…imagining she is talking about sheet…as in sheets… But somehow it couldn’t connect with the course. Course sheets… At first I thought …perhaps she is pursuing some course where they perhaps use sheets, cloth or something as learning materials or for fine art or something.

Later, I realised she said ‘shit’… ‘Course shit…’ to mean a paper with the cut off points .This talks volumes about how young people view academics and the general rule of life that one has to struggle through  life to make it.

So many view academics as some form of disturbance. These young ones call things ‘shit…’ Hohoho… Anyhow, I gave her direction to the senate building.

As she goes, she asks, “dude, do you think these niggers will give me shit, coz my points are shit”.

I asked her which course she wants to pursue and her reply was… “Huh…I ain’t sure… But any shit they cub me, I will just try.”

I was just rolling with laughter…hahhah….. She finally said she wants social work and social administration. A course which requires to work with ordinary people who don’t understand that language, and will view you as undisciplined, or when you continue to use such a language.

Though I understand the reasons such students speak like they are just coming from outside countries.

But seriously speaking, if after giving her directions she had said, ‘Thanks Nigger or even if she had said….Your help was… whatever she could have added to that line…as long as the word shit was there. For sure I would have jumped out of my skeleton and issued her with a slap. Whats wrong with kids of these days? ???!!!
