Nkrumah’s Legacy Lives On: A Call for African Unity

The echoes of Kwame Nkrumah’s powerful legacy reverberated through Makerere University on September 21, 2024, as the institution commemorated the 70th anniversary of Nkrumah Hall. Students, scholars, and dignitaries gathered to pay tribute to the Pan-Africanist icon and his unwavering commitment to African unity.

In a public lecture delivered at the Yusuf Lule Auditorium, Prime Minister Emeritus Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda urged the younger generation to embrace Nkrumah’s vision of a united and independent Africa. “Kwame Nkrumah was a visionary leader who recognized the power of unity in the face of adversity,” Dr. Rugunda stated. “His legacy serves as a constant reminder of the potential of Africa to achieve greatness through collective action.”

Dr. Rugunda highlighted Nkrumah’s pivotal role in the struggle for African independence and his unwavering belief in the power of pan-Africanism. He emphasized the importance of continental cooperation in addressing the challenges facing Africa, including economic development, political stability, and social justice.

The lecture inspired the audience to reflect on Nkrumah’s ideals and to consider their own role in shaping the future of the continent. As the world continues to grapple with global challenges, the message of unity and solidarity that Nkrumah championed remains as relevant as ever.
