Parliament has directed the Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs to provide an update next week on the long-delayed closure of the Kiteezi landfill and the compensation of families affected by last year’s collapse.
The directive came after East Kyadondo MP Muwada Nkunyingi raised a matter of national importance, criticizing the government for failing to act on earlier promises to shut down the landfill and resettle displaced residents.
“This tragedy was predicted, but 14 months later, families are still suffering and waiting for help,” Nkunyingi said, reminding legislators that concerns about the landfill’s safety were raised as early as 2021.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, who presided over the sitting, described the issue as urgent and directed the Minister for Kampala to present a detailed progress report. The report will outline measures taken to close the landfill, compensate affected households, and implement relocation plans.
“The House must be informed about what has been done to address this long-standing crisis,” Tayebwa said.
The Kiteezi landfill, which has served as Kampala’s main waste disposal site for over two decades, has faced growing safety and environmental concerns. Its collapse last year caused extensive damage and displaced several families living near the site.
