President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Thursday 24th April 2025 hosted former Kenyan President H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta at State House Entebbe, following Kenyatta’s keynote address at the second Annual Guild Leaders’ Summit 2025 held at Makerere University.
The summit, organized by the Guild Presidents Leadership Academy, brought together student leaders from universities across East Africa, including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, Rwanda, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

During the meeting, H.E. Kenyatta thanked President Museveni for the hospitality extended during his visit and highlighted the energy and unity displayed by the youth at the summit.
“I am very grateful, Mzee, for your warm welcome. Your people have looked after us well. We hope that we have met the expectations of our youth through the engagements we had,” Kenyatta said.

He noted that the youth were focused on issues such as unemployment and job creation. “What excited me most was their realization that they are stronger together. They can’t just sit back and wait for things to happen, they must take the lead,” he said.
Kenyatta encouraged young people to overcome ethnic and religious divisions and to work toward a shared future. “They must overcome these barriers and realize their common destiny. But that destiny will not come to them in their bedrooms; they have to go out and work for it,” he emphasized.
President Museveni welcomed the summit’s initiative and expressed interest in engaging directly with the leadership academy. “I would like to meet the leadership academy and strategize on the kind of message we should be spreading to the youth,” he said.

Addressing the issue of youth unemployment, Museveni stressed the importance of market access for economic growth. “The jobs you’re talking about will come when businesses succeed. But for businesses to thrive, we must solve the issue of market access. Without a market, the economy cannot grow,” he said.
He cited European history to emphasize the need for regional integration. “Germany was once 31 kingdoms until business leaders pushed for unity. The same thing happened in France: the middle class, who were blocked by internal barriers, triggered the French Revolution,” he noted.

Reflecting on past efforts to form an East African Federation, Museveni warned against isolation. “Some leaders preferred to remain big fish in small ponds. But without integration, our potential is limited,” he said.
He urged the youth to focus on productive engagement. “Wake up, stop spending too much time. Let’s work on expanding our markets and solving real problems,” Museveni said.
Mr. Masesa Demiano, Executive Director of the Guild Presidents Leadership Academy, said the summit aimed to bridge the gap between young leaders and experienced statesmen. “This was our second summit. We brought in delegates from various universities in East Africa. Our goal is to make this an annual gathering of transformative leaders,” he said.
He added that the academy, based at Makerere University, provides mentorship and leadership training to student leaders across the region.
