Prof. Paul Waako to takeover from Prof. Mary Okwakol as Vice Chancellor of Busitema University

Prof. Paul Waako has been appointed as Busitema University Vice Chancellor. According to information from the university, Waako will serve for a five year term effective 1st May 2019.

In the year 2018, Busitema University Council constituted a Search Committee for the post of Vice Chancellor. The Committee was comprised of two (2) members of the University Council and three (3) members of the University Senate.

“Following deliberations on the Report from Senate on Thursday 21st February 2019, the University Council unanimously resolved to recommend Professor Paul Waako to the Chancellor for appointment as Vice Chancellor of Busitema University”, a letter from the university reads in part.

He takes over from Prof. Mary J.N. Okwakol, the founding Vice Chancellor. Her term of office ends on April 30, 2019.

Profile of Prof. Paul Waako 

Professor Paul Waako is the founding Dean of Busitema University’s Faculty of Health Sciences which was established in 2013, and where he has spearheaded the development and implementation of vibrant competence based and Community Based Medical Education and Service programs.

He was previously Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at Makerere University for 10 years. He has served as Coordinator of the East African Regional Technical Resource Center on Pharmaceuticals.

He has also served as Visiting Professor at several Universities, and as external examiner at University of Bergen in Norway, University of Cape Town and Walter Sisulu University in South Africa, Nairobi University and Moi University in Kenya, and Muimbiri University in Tanzania.

He has been a consultanton several USAID- supported programs, and he is a member of many expert committees, national and International.

He holds a PhD in Clinical Pharmacology from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, MSc (Pharmacology) and MBChB Degree from Makerere University. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Management from the Uganda Management Institute.

He is a Fellow of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences.

Professor Waako has managed, as Principal Investigator, over 10 research projects, including international collaborative research projects, mostly focusing on strengthening pharmaceutical systems.

He has published extensively in the areas of traditional medicines, drug discovery and development, rational use of medicines, and medicine supply systems, with over 50 publications in peer reviewed Journals to his name.

He has supervised over 10 PhD students, and very many Masters students. He is a Senior Research Fellow at Queen Mary University London.
