Professors at Public Universities to get Shs.2m salary rise

University professors in Uganda lecturing at public institutions will receive Shs. 6.3m as monthly salary payment up from 4.1m.

According to the national budget 2015/2016 read on June 11th 2015 at Serena, Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Hon. Matia Kasaija said, this would be possible through the UShs.

There are seven public universities in Uganda that include Makerere University, Kyambogo University, Gulu University, Busitema University, Muni University and Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

In August 2014, President Yoweri Museveni pledged to raise the gross salary of a university professor, the highest paid academic to shs. 15m, starting in the 2015/2016 financial year.

Under the new structure, a teaching assistant, the lowest paid will eventually earn shs. 2.5m.

This pay rise will make Ugandan Professors the best paid in East Africa. According to a 2012 report issued by a committee of all vice chancellors of public universities in Kenya.

The monthly average salary and allowances of a full professor in Kenya stands at $2,200 (about sh5.5m) compared to $4,900 (about 12.25m) in Rwanda, $3,200 (about sh8m) in Tanzania and $ 1,150 (sh2.8) in Uganda.

Uganda’s teaching assistants will also be the highest paid in East Africa. Teaching assistants get $844 (sh2.1m) in Kenya, 00 (sh3m) in Rwanda and ,500 (about sh3.
