The Mufti of Rwanda, Sheikh Musa Sindayigaya, has hailed the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) as a regional hub for Islamic education and expressed readiness to deepen collaboration between the university and Rwanda’s Muslim community.

During his visit to IUIU’s main campus in Mbale on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the Mufti held high-level discussions with university leadership led by Rector Prof. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda. Other university officials present included Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Dr. Jamil Sserwanga and Vice-Rector for Finance Prof. Abdul Mpaata.

The discussions focused on strengthening ties in Islamic education, with emphasis on imam training and leadership development for Muslim communities in Rwanda.

“Islamic University in Uganda is one of the leading institutions offering Islamic studies at various levels,” said Mufti Musa, acknowledging IUIU’s influence in East Africa.

He also commended the university on the recent completion of its new $13.5 million Faculty of Engineering and Technology, describing the milestone as evidence of IUIU’s commitment to academic and infrastructural growth.

The Mufti’s visit signifies a growing interest in cross-border academic partnerships and religious education exchange between Rwanda and Uganda.

Prof. Gyagenda welcomed the collaboration, noting that regional partnerships are essential for building capacity in Islamic leadership across East Africa.

The visit adds momentum to IUIU’s expanding regional footprint and aligns with the university’s mission to promote holistic education rooted in Islamic values.
