Prof. Justine Namaalwa, Program Director of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University, has called on Scholars to uphold the values of integrity, responsibility, and community service during the holiday period.
Speaking on May 19, 2025, during the Scholars Family Day event held at the Rugby Grounds, Makerere University, Prof. Namaalwa encouraged students to use their time away from campus to positively impact their communities.
“As you return to your homes and countries, I encourage you to volunteer your time and data to support prospective applicants for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship,” Prof. Namaalwa said. “Do not ask for a single coin. Just offer your help and proudly uphold the Makerere flag.”

She also advised Scholars to identify community challenges that relate to their academic disciplines and use the holiday to engage in meaningful research, entrepreneurship, or social ventures.
“It could be an issue like poor sanitation or low immunization rates among children under five,” she said. “Document the problem and think critically about possible solutions.”
Themed ‘Building and Strengthening Our Bonds,’ the Family Day brought together over 100 Scholars, mentors, and members of the Program Implementation Team.
The event featured aerobics, sack races, running competitions, puzzle challenges, and storytelling sessions that fostered unity and teamwork.

Dr. Rodney Rugyema, the Acting Dean of Students, praised the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program for its contribution to youth empowerment.
He highlighted the importance of mentorship, counseling, and entrepreneurship training in shaping future leaders.
“You left home to change home. Do not forget the goal,” Dr. Rugyema told the Scholars.
“Be responsible. Avoid engaging in sexual activities that may lead to unintended responsibilities. During the holidays, learn a skill, be productive, or plant trees.”
Derrick Asiimwe, President of the Scholars Association, thanked the Program Team for their support and mentorship. “You have really loved and disciplined us,” he said. “You are the true definition of Mathew 19:14 where Jesus said let the children come and not hinder them.”

The day ended with the Shalom family crowned overall winners after excelling in the team activities, taking home a trophy in recognition of their spirit and participation.
