The Ministry of Education and Sports has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that schools across Uganda will reopen in April 2026 because of the General Elections, describing the information as false and misleading.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry clarified that there has been no change to the approved 2026 school calendar and urged the public to ignore unofficial announcements from unverified sources.
“The Ministry clarifies that this information is not true and should be disregarded,” the statement reads, referring to claims that schools would reopen on April 4, 2026.
According to the Ministry, all schools and institutions will reopen strictly in line with the school calendar approved on November 24, 2025. Term One of the 2026 Academic Year will begin on Monday, February 2, and end on Friday, May 1, 2026.
The Ministry emphasized that the approved calendar published on its official website remains the only authoritative reference for school opening and closing dates nationwide.
“There has been no change to the approved school calendar,” the Ministry stated, adding that reopening dates remain as officially issued.
Headteachers, parents, guardians, school administrators, and learners were directed to adhere fully to the approved dates and to disregard any contrary information circulating online.
“All school administrators are directed to adhere firmly to these dates and to ignore unofficial announcements circulated through unverified sources,” the statement said.
The Ministry further advised the public to rely only on information shared through its official platforms to avoid confusion and misinformation.
The clarification was signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Kedrace R. Turyagyenda, on January 6, 2026.
