Shortly after loosing a student to suicide, Makerere University has faced yet another tragic death when one of her student drowned in the university swimming pool on Sunday October 13, 2019.

James Uwimpuhwe, a second year Arts student drowned went to refresh himself that evening, however, after  attempting underwater swimming, the student never surfaced again.

“I have received with much shock news of the death of James Uwimpuhwe, a second year Arts student who has drowned in the University swimming pool this evening. A brief to me from the Swimming Pool management indicates that James got stuck while attempting under-water swimming,” Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe said.

“Life savers on duty rushed to his rescue, offered Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other first aid but he died on the way to hospital. I send my condolences to his family and the entire student community. May His Soul Rest In Peace,” Prof. Nawangwe added.

The university has faced similar occurrences and the most recent one, last year John Paul Mirimu, a student of Information Systems and a resident of Nsibirwa Hall, died on arrival at Mulago hospital after drowning in the same swimming pool.
