Makerere University ushered in a new era of student leadership on March 21, 2025, as Ssentamu Churchill James was sworn in as the 91st Guild President during a ceremony at the university’s Main Hall. The event marked a significant transition, with students, faculty, and university officials in attendance.
In his inaugural speech, Ssentamu expressed gratitude and commitment to his leadership role.
“It’s been God’s grace all through,” he said, acknowledging the support of his family and mentors. He pledged to restore Makerere’s academic excellence and student engagement, stating, “We have been entrusted with the responsibility to bring political, social, and academic salvation.”
Call for Unity and Student-Centered Leadership
Reflecting on his victory, Ssentamu credited his campaign team and dedicated the win to the students of Makerere.
“I am no one without my team,” he said. “Those students are our bosses.” He called for unity, resilience, and collaboration among his cabinet members to address student challenges.

Alongside Vice Guild President Kadondi Gracious, Ssentamu took the oath of office, officially assuming leadership of the Guild Government.
The ceremony also included the swearing-in of Guild Representative Councilors from various colleges and halls of residence.
Outgoing President’s Advice to New Leaders
Outgoing Guild President Lubega Vincent Nsamba shared lessons from his tenure, stressing the importance of teamwork and engagement with university governance.
Quoting theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Nsamba warned against ignorance in leadership and urged his successors to seek knowledge and wisdom.
He encouraged the new leadership to foster cooperation with university management and seek divine guidance in their decision-making.
University Administration Backs New Leadership
Speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Buyinza Mukadasi praised the peaceful transition and urged the new guild leadership to focus on academic excellence and responsible governance.
“This is the time to chart a new leadership journey,” Mukadasi said. “As students of Makerere University, first and foremost, aim for academic excellence.”
He also called for continuous dialogue between students and the university administration, emphasizing that student leaders must serve as a bridge between management and the student body.
Dean of Students, Dr. Winifred Kabumbuli, commended Nsamba’s administration for its contribution to student welfare and urged Ssentamu’s team to uphold inclusivity and diversity.
“As we celebrate this transition, let us reaffirm our commitment to fostering a supportive campus environment,” she said.

With his tenure officially underway, President Ssentamu Churchill James faces the task of delivering on his campaign promises and advocating for student interests.
