Mr. Kwikiriza Wilson, the registrar Academics has confirmed that the 13th Mountains of the moon University Graduation will be virtual due to the Covid-19 situation that hit the country.
Mountains of the moon University is to hold its first virtual graduation since its inception. The graduation is scheduled to take place on Friday 25th June 2021 and only 200 invited guests are expected to attend the physical ceremony.
Due to the Covid-19 outbreak early last year 2020, the Ministry of Health issued the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to all Ugandans should follow to prevent the spread of the Corona virus and limited number of public gatherings was one of them. This has prompted the University administration to reach a decision of having its 13th Graduation be virtual.
With this virtual kind of Graduation, students, Parents, well-wishers of the institution and some of the uninvited staff members are expected to conduct and access graduation ceremony via online using Internet tools like zoom, Facebook, and other recommended sites. The ceremony is also expected to be on Radios and Tv stations.
Speaking to the assistant Registrar Academics of the institution, Kwikiriza Wilson acknowledged the virtual kind of graduation citing that they have ended up with that decision because they had to conduct the graduation with respect to Covid-19 standard operating procedures to prevent the spread of corona virus. He adds that they have to ensure that their students graduate in spite of the Pandemic.
Mr. Wilson also said if covid-19 disease persists, they expect to continue conducting the virtual kind of graduations for the next generations to come while improvising with other technological innovations that will be developing.
However, some of the students who will graduate this year have expressed their feelings over this virtual kind of graduation. Some have welcomed this decision of conducting the graduation online while others have shunned it.
Birungi John, a student who is ready to graduate with a Bachelors Degree of Science in Agriculture said this kind of Graduation is not okay with him. He said the day of graduation it’s when all students come together and share their last moments and contacts for job connections which will not be the case this time.
Tumwine Godfrey also a student yet to graduate this year says it is okay with virtual graduation because it will save some of them from over spending resources like money for transport to attend the ceremony.
Same way other students have expressed mixed reactions.
When asked whether students will pay graduation fees since the graduation will be online, the finance revenue officer of the institution Arthurn Musiime, said graduation fees will be a mandatory payment because the graduation ceremony will be conducted though a few will be invited. He adds that streaming and broadcasting the graduation ceremony online will require costs.
Previously, graduation ceremonies attracted a huge number of attendants about over 2000, of these including both parents and guests of grandaunts, Staff members, Invited guests and well-wishers of the institution.
Covid-19 disease has caused much change on the activities calendar of Mountains of the moon University and this year’s graduation is one of them. It was supposed to happen last year November.
