Uganda Christian University (UCU) officially welcomed its new students on May 20 with a spirited induction service at Nkoyoyo Hall, urging them to pursue academic excellence, personal discipline, and spiritual growth.
The Vice Chancellor, Canon Prof. Aaron Mushengyezi, presided over the ceremony attended by faculty deans, heads of departments, directors, and hundreds of new students. In his keynote address, Prof. Mushengyezi challenged students to embrace UCU’s unique values that emphasize intellectual, spiritual, and social development.
“Why is coming to UCU such a big deal?” he asked. “Number one, this is the cleanest, greenest, and most orderly university in Uganda. A UK publication recently ranked UCU among the top eight most beautiful universities in Africa.”
He highlighted UCU’s academic milestones, noting that the School of Law is now ranked number one in Uganda, while the School of Medicine is among the most sought-after in the country.
Prof. Mushengyezi stressed that UCU’s strength lies not just in academics but in the holistic grooming of students.
“We have heard from employers that our graduates are more balanced—intellectually, socially, and spiritually,” he said. “They have a strong work ethic and relate well with others. That is because here, we give them a whole dose.”
He emphasized the university’s commitment to nurturing soft skills such as respect, discipline, and interpersonal relations—traits he said are highly valued by employers.
“When you graduate, you will realize employers value how you interact with people, how you commit to work, and how you carry yourself,” he said. “These soft skills are very important and we emphasize them here.”
Quoting from Daniel 6:1–5, he reminded students that university life grants much freedom but demands personal responsibility.
“Freedom is not completely free. If it is not well managed, it has cost implications. Without God’s wisdom, you may find yourself in very precarious situations,” he said.
He warned students against destructive habits such as drug and alcohol abuse, night partying, and gambling.
“Discipline yourselves. Pay your tuition on time. Do not engage in betting or habits that will derail your future,” he cautioned.
Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, Mr. David Mugawe, reinforced the importance of the induction service as a symbol of the university’s values.
“When I joined university as an undergraduate, we only registered. Nothing like an induction service,” he said. “Here at UCU, this service marks your presentation to the Lord as new members of the community.”
He encouraged the students to live up to the university’s motto, A Centre of Excellence in the Heart of Africa.
“It’s not just a phrase on the wall,” he said. “It’s something we work hard to demonstrate through our infrastructure, academic programs, and Christian character.”
During the event, Prof. Mushengyezi introduced all deans, directors, and heads of departments, emphasizing UCU’s collaborative academic community.
The service ended with prayers, dedicating the new students to God and seeking divine guidance for their academic journey.
As they left Nkoyoyo Hall, students were not only inducted into university life but also challenged to carry forward UCU’s legacy of integrity, purpose, and excellence.
