From modest beginnings in 1986, YMCA Comprehensive Institute (YCI) has grown into Uganda’s first chartered Other Degree Awarding Institution (ODAI)—a national leader in vocational and technical education.

Established by the Uganda Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) to equip youth and vulnerable groups with practical skills, the institute now offers over 30 National Council for Higher Education (NCHE)-accredited courses. Its two campuses—located at Buganda Road in Wandegeya and Buwambo-Matugga on Bombo Road—are hubs for thousands of learners preparing for today’s job market.

The institute’s Principal, Dr. Herbert Mukasa, says the achievement of degree-awarding status in August 2015 was a turning point.

“Just as Christians eagerly await the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas day, the staff, students, and entire YCI community eagerly awaited the transformation of YCI into a degree awarding institution,” Dr. Mukasa said.

YCI’s unique curriculum blends practical skills and entrepreneurship to address youth unemployment. It offers programs at degree, diploma, and certificate levels, alongside short life-skilling courses. These are delivered through flexible study options including day, evening, and weekend sessions.

In the last five years, YCI has undertaken major developments:

  • Expanded infrastructure, including hostels, ICT labs, education blocks, and a four-floor Jubilee Block.
  • Opened the Buwambo campus to accommodate growing enrollment.
  • Acquired a 64-seater institute bus for student activities.
  • Invested in state-of-the-art vocational labs for hands-on training.
  • Built a qualified faculty, some with PhDs, sponsored by the Institute itself.

“Our staff consists of graduates with diverse competencies, capable of managing the diversified curriculum effectively,” Dr. Mukasa noted.

The institute currently enrolls over 20,000 students, up from just 800 in its early years. Each year, more than 4,000 graduates enter the job market with skills in fields such as ICT, engineering, fashion, business, cosmetology, education, and hospitality.

YCI’s strength lies in its reputation for vocational excellence, long-standing partnerships with supervisory bodies such as NCHE and the Ministry of Education and Sports, and strong community engagement.

The institute’s core mission remains equipping learners with hands-on, job-ready skills to boost employment and economic growth. Its impact has made it a model institution not just in Uganda, but across the region.

“I am absolutely thrilled by the remarkable achievements we have accomplished,” Dr. Mukasa added. “We now boast a curriculum specifically designed to meet global market trends.”

With solid governance from YMCA and an enterprising governing council, YCI continues to position itself as a top-tier vocational institute dedicated to shaping Uganda’s future workforce.
