2,950 Students Approved for the 2018/2019 Government Study Loan

Minister of State for Higher Education, J.C Muyingo at the release of 2017/18 List of Students on Government study loan

Over 2,950 students have been approved by the Higher Education Student’s Financing Board for the government loan scheme in 20 universities and 33 tertiary institutions.

According to a statement released by the chairperson Higher Education Student’s Financing Board, Callisto Locheng, there has been an increase in the number of applicants from 4,218 in 2017/2018 t0 4,603 this academic year. Approved students also increased from 1,448 in 2017/18 to 2,950 in 2018/19 .

Addressing a press conference at the Uganda Media Centre, Lochneg commended the Ministry for Higher Education for its continued efforts towards education and ensuring that the disadvantaged also receive a quality higher education.

“Hon Minister, We continue to award loans to persons with disabilities on affirmative action to pursue humanities and a total of 31 students with disabilities were awarded loans to pursue Humanity courses ( 20 male and 11 female)” he remarked.

The chairperson also highlighted that for a student to qualify as an eligible candidate, he/she has to be a An applicant must be a Ugandan, admitted for an accredited course or programme of study, admitted in an accredited (Chartered) Institution of Higher Learning and should have applied for the loan.

While the eligible institutes include;Makerere University, Ndejje University, Kyambogo University, Nkumba University, Busitema University, Uganda Martyrs’ University, Gulu University, Uganda Christian University, Muni University,Bugema University and Kabale University.

Others are; Islamic University in Uganda, Mbarara University of Science & Technology, Kampala International University, Lira university, Bishop Stuart University, Soroti university, Kampala University, Makerere university Business school and Mt of the moon.

This is the fifth set of students to be admitted on the loan scheme for both university and at tertiary level.

In attendance was the Hon. minister of state for higher education, Mr. John Chrysestom Muyingo and other senior dignitaries under the Ministry of Education and sports.
