The First Lady and Minister for Education and Sports, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni on 15th November 2017 launched the World Bank funded Africa Centres of Excellence, two of which are housed at Makerere University.
One of these centres is at the College of Engineering, Design, Art and technology (CEDAT) while the other is at the College of Agricultural and Environmental Studies (CAES).
CEDAT hosts the Africa Center of Excellence in Materials Product Development and Nanotechnology (MAPRONANO ACE) While CAES hosts the Makerere University Regional Centre for Crop Improvement (MaRCCI).
Each of these centres will receive USD6 million for a period of 5 years in an effort to grow research in the specific areas.
Makerere University was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance and Administration)-Prof. William Bazeyo, Director Research and Graduate Training-Prof. Mukadasi Buyinza, Principal CAES-Prof Bernard Bashaasha, the centre leaders Prof. John Baptist Kirabira from CEDAT and Dr. Richard Edema from CAES, as well as other members of staff.
