How I Found True Love at Campus

By Namata Proxie

“Namata, as you are leaving for campus, remember that there are so many temptations out there, “my mum told me as I was leaving home to join Kampala International University, my dream University. I could not wait to get there.

Gust of wind, a buckle of noise in the air, a long line of students at the University gate speaking in all languages, I joined the line and had my first step in university premises.

I gazed in the landscape, fresh routes from one building to another; I was confused on which direction to take. Before taking any further step I picked up my phone and called my friend Suzan who came and picked me up.

Different kinds of students, dressed in skimpy clothes, girls with lips shinning like they had been painted with red sadolin paint and the Nigerian student’s dress code reminded me of the famous Nigerian movie “Blood sisters”  which I had watched over ten years ago.

Clubbing and dating were the topics on almost every student’s lips, and being in year one, I was anxious to know what happens in class and how dating feels like. These kinds of stories that I would over hear students jazzing among themselves almost made me wake up for winter and go to campus for more. They made me wish to date someone, I mean all my friends had gotten boyfriends in less than one month’s time.

Being a social kind of person I had made myself a lot of friends in a short period, thus my meeting with this tall charming dark skinned Acholi guy who asked me out. I played had to get but he finally worn my heart. Raymond played hard not to be forgotten.

He spent three weeks without mentioning any sweet word to me after I had accepted his proposal. After one month in a relationship, he sent me a text,”I miss u”, it read.

This made me develop goose bumps and I almost screamed at the top of my voice that I was finally dating. But the shy character inside me held me back. I was lost in imaginations, drawing pictures of me and him having ice cream at Nandos. That’s the first time I felt the vibe of vibing.

Susan told me that campus is all about adventuring, she said there should be a guy for rent, a guy for upkeep and another one for makeup and medication. Being my friend I took up her advice.

We started going out with her different boyfriends, sipped all kinds of liquor and smoked shisha. I started telling Raymond all kinds of lies claiming to be busy in books, however much I lied to him, he believed in me and his passion for me never died.

The funniest part about dating is that every man wants to date a campuser; be it boda boda guys, old and married men and lecturers themselves. Dating won many students retakes and others messed up in their relationships.

Well I finally decided to settle with Raymond having stickled onto me. However much he knew that there had been other guys chasing after me. Our chemistry grew stronger.
