Makerere University non teaching staff both administrative and support staff who have been on strike for close to a month have suspended the industrial action and agreed to resume work.
The decision was reached in a joint general assembly held on the evening of Friday 21st August 2015 and chaired by Mr. Vincent Bigaba, the chairperson of Makerere University Administrative Staff Association (MASA).
The development comes after staff associations MASA and NUEI agreed to the Inspector General’s proposal and assurance to meet the president of Uganda Mr. Museveni to discuss their salary demands.
In a meeting with the Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura, ten (10) MASA and NUEI members represented the rest and agreed on terms that he put in writing his assurances to non-teaching staff.
“We asked government that if we were to agree to call off our strike, we either receive money this financial year 2015/2016 at least 50% salary arrears. And if there is no money, the government commits itself to giving us 100% enhancement in the next financial year 2016/17,” said Vincent
