Makerere University strike leaves businessmen in tears.

Makerere University students have continued with their earlier demand of reviewing the new 60% tuition policy. The policy which was passed in 2005 but currently being implemented requires a student to pay 60% of the fees within six weeks from the start of the semester.

This has caused numerous resentments that have resulted into violent strikes aimed at fighting the policy.  Yesterday’s strike started from Nkurumah Hall  before shortly attracting other male halls like Mitchell, Lumumba and Livingstone.

This time the strike did not only affect the academic business at campus but also the neighboring business community danced to the tunes of the rioting students. Students looted kiosks and eta whatever was chewable leaving the innocent businessmen and women in shock and loses. They also drank beers, sodas and safe drinks that were found in the fridges.

Many students say the period of six weeks is too short for them to make payments. Last week the students demanded an explanation from the University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dumba Ssentamu who told them to write a petition which they did.

Prof. Dumba says the students’ petition was presented to the University council but sources reveal that following the financial need of the university, the policy will continue to operate.
