There is hope that Makerere University is going to be opened soon such that both the new and continuing students report for studies.
This comes after the striking Makerere university staff agreed with the University Council to put their salary demand on hold and let the university be opened first.
The university council told the staff that they should concentrate on reopening the oldest public university as negotiations with government to implement their 100 percent salary increment continue.
Makerere university was closed two weeks ago after the staff vowed never to step in class unless their salaries are increased by 100 percent.
The staff demand for their salaries to be increased by 100 percent follows a council resolution in May this year that approved 100 percent salary increment for all the staff at Makerere university.
But the government and council failed to fulfill the increment as it had been promised to the staff.
