NCHE Lists Expired Degrees in Uganda

The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has recently faced public criticism following a story circulating social media .

The story highlighted a case where a graduate from Makerere University had their academic documents rejected by a university in England due to their degree being from an “expired” course at the Ugandan institution.

In response to the backlash, NCHE has provided clarification on the concept of accreditation expiry. According to NCHE, when a program’s accreditation expires, it means that the program needs reassessment to ensure that the key aspects for which accreditation was initially granted are still in place. If not, the program is considered out of date or “expired.”

In the case of the graduate whose academic documents were rejected in England, it appears that the course they pursued at Makerere University had not undergone the necessary accreditation renewal. This discrepancy led to the rejection of the graduate’s degree by the admitting university. Campus Bee, investigating the matter, delved into the NCHE website (referred to by the admitting university) and discovered a shocking revelation – there are over 2,000 expired degrees listed.
