Vipers SC Wins the 2022/2023 Uganda Premier League

Vipers SC has yet again won the Star Times Uganda Premier League. On the final day of the season, Vipers defeated Busoga United 5-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.

To win the championship, the Venoms needed to not only win but also hope that SC Villa loses their last match against URA FC.

SC Villa, who started the day as the favourites, finished the season in third place with 52 points when KCCA defeated Bright Stars 5-0.

Vipers SC won the title thanks to a better goal difference after a tie on points (53) with KCCA.

Abubakar Lawal’s brace, together with goals from Yunus Sentamu, Martin Kizza, and Bright Anukani, secured victory for the Vipers in the pivotal match at Kitende.

Meanwhile, in KCCA FC’s match against Bright Stars in Lugogo, attacker Rogers Mato scored four goals, with Charles Lwanga adding another. However, Jackson Mayanja’s team could only finish second in the final standings.

Villa fans who had gathered in large numbers to Wankulukuku SC were disappointed.

URA FC defeated hosts SC Villa 1-0 in the Mutesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku, with to Najib Fesali’s second-half goal.

Earlier in the day, there was an upbeat vibe at Wankulukuku, as Villa fans anticipated a triumphant event, considering their edge over rivals Vipers and KCCA FC.

Villa had hoped to score a goal early on thanks to the efforts of Charles Bbaale, but their advances were blocked by URA’s well-organized defensive line.

URA scored on a free kick from Saidi Kyeyune in the 61st minute, as Najib Fesali headed the ball into the net, ending SC Villa’s title chances. Despite SC Villa’s best efforts to equalize, URA goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi foiled them all.

As the final whistle blew, a number of distraught Villa fans stormed out of the stadium, while others hurled abuse at URA FC players for denying them the title.

Similarly, SC Villa players were spotted in tears at the end of the match, upset by their failure to end their two-decade-long championship drought.
