Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe Advises Higher Institutions to Lobby For Funds

The Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has advised Institutions for Higher learning in Africa to accumulate funds and resources which will aid the rapid growth of the population students in universities.

Nawangwe said this on August 3, 2018 while at the 14^thGraduation Ceremony of Mount Kenya University hosted at the Graduation Pavillion Grounds Thika- Garissa.

According to the vice chancellor, in spite of the public investment in the higher education sector in Africa the last 15 years, there is still a great gap to be filled especially in regards to improving the number of students in these institutions.

“At the same time, our economies are struggling with many priorities to bring our countries out of poverty. Therefore, Universities are under pressure to increase financial base and control costs,” he emphasized.

The professor highlighted government Sponsorship of both public and private university students, Governments’ commitment to offer Free Primary Education and Free Secondary Education in Kenya and elsewhere in Africa and Scholarships and Grants for enhancing education in Africa as some of the major prospects that can help uplift the higher institutions of learning.

Others included; Indirect External Aid,Diversification of Financing Sources,Scaling Faculty Research Revenue,Consultancy Services,Third stream revenue generation,University-Industry Partnerships and Prudent financial management.

The theme of the event centered on Financing of Higher Education in Africa for Quality and Sustainability.

Prof. Nawangwe recognized the efforts of the founders of Mount Kenya University which he said has contributed towards the development of Africa from marginalization and poverty. He additionally congratulated all graduands towards their breakthrough and encouraged them to live with a noble cause.

“My gratitude goes to all the graduands. I commend you for the great triumph as well as achievements in your academics. Indeed, I am delighted to celebrate this occasion with you and I bring you warm salutations from Makerere University,” he said.

On September 19, 2017, Makerere and Mount Kenya University signed a Memorandum of Understanding in which the two institutions agreed to improve higher education in the region.
