Tear Gas rock Kyambogo University as Students Resume Strike over Tuition Increment

Kyambogo University Students were on Friday 26th December 2018 in a demonstration for the second time in a week over the proposed tuition increment. The strike started at around 10:00am.

A section of students were on their way matching  to the main building demanding for a word from the Vice Chancellor over the matter.

Students are demanding for the removal of the late registration fee which was initially UGX 50,000 but rose to UGX 100,000.

The University also intends to increase the tuition fee by 200,000 for the coming academic year.

Internship allowance which was initially UGX 100,000 has also been increased by 150,000.

However following the strike on Tuesday 23rd October 2018, the University Vice Chancellor came out and clarified the internship issue saying the increment will only affect the new students of the 2018/19 Academic  year.

“The increment in internship fees to Ug. shs. 250,000/= will affect new students i.e those of 2018/2019. The old fees will apply to continuing fees,” Prof Elly Katunguka said on Tuesday.

Police came and fired teargas to disperse the angry students. Those who were inside the lecture rooms left classes for Safety.

Police continued following students from the University to Banda premises while firing out teargas whenever they could see a group of students gathered.

The strike follows the recent one which was conducted on Tuesday 23rd October 2018 but was calmed down by security operatives following heavy truck deployments within the university coupled with teargas.

This was after the Student leaders organized a meeting to meet the university Vice Chancellor Prof Elly Katunguka but he never appeared.

Students say the increments were made without consultation of their Guild representatives. They say the Guild President, Amanya German is siding with the University administrators and not addressing the students concerns.
