Makerere University has taken another step toward fully digital learning after its College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) formally agreed on how to run the institution’s first purpose-built micro-studio.

The memorandum of understanding, signed on Wednesday at CEDAT, sets out how the college will operate and maintain the studio and its high-definition cameras, sound booths and lighting rigs. Deputy Principal Assoc. Prof. Kizito Maria Kasule inked the deal for Makerere, while Dr Shon Jin Gon signed on behalf of the Korea Institute for Development Strategy (KDS), which manages KOICA’s $12.2 million (UGX 44 billion) distance-education grant to the university.

Under the five-year KOICA project—launched in February—Makerere will build four micro-studios, train more than 300 lecturers to produce interactive content, and upgrade its Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) platform so that students can stream laboratory demonstrations and design tutorials on demand.

Prof Kasule said the studio “gives lecturers the tools to turn practical engineering lessons into professional digital modules,” adding that CEDAT will create a production timetable so every department records material. Dr Shon called the handover “a milestone in KOICA’s mission to help Ugandan universities reach learners wherever they live.”

The facility will be staffed by a multimedia technician and two instructional-design specialists funded through the KOICA grant. According to the project plan, the first batch of online labs will be ready for the August 2025 semester, cutting face-to-face contact hours for large foundation classes by up to 40 percent.

Makerere’s Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Buyinza Mukadasi, who hosted the ceremony, said the university aims to push all general courses onto the ODeL system within three years. “Blended delivery is no longer optional; it is essential for a public university serving 40,000 students across the region,” he told guests after touring the studio.
