Gulu University appoints Ruhakana Rugunda as new Chancellor

Gulu University welcomes Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda as its new Chancellor

Former Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda assumes the role of Gulu University Chancellor following his installation on Friday 24th February by vice president Jessica Alupa and will be assisted by the University’s serving Vice Chancellor-Professor George Openjuru Ladaa.

With his appointment, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda joins the ranks of the previous two Chancellors of Gulu University, effectively becoming the third to hold the position.

In November of last year, President Yoweri Museveni appointed him as Chancellor to succeed Prof. Ian Bantubano Fredrick Kayanja, who had retired due to his advanced age.

After assuming the position of Chancellor in October 2014, Prof. Ian Bantubano Fredrick Kayanja, an accomplished veterinarian and academic administrator, relinquished his role in October of last year.

During the graduation ceremony where 1,270 students received various academic awards, including degrees and Doctorates of Philosophies (PhDs), Maj. Dr. Jessica Epel Alupo represented President Yoweri Museveni.

Shortly after his installation, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda presided over the University’s 18th graduation ceremony conferring Diplomas, Bachelor’s and Postgraduates degrees and five Phds.

What awaits Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda

Since its founding in 2005, Gulu University has faced a series of development challenges, such as a lack of land for further expansion, recurrent strikes by lecturers and students, as well as inadequate learning facilities.

In addition to its other initiatives, Gulu University intends to engage in the production of juice using locally available mango varieties as a means of reducing community wastage during seasons of abundance.

Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda’s appointment as Chancellor also inspires confidence in the realization of the institution’s strategic objectives, among other things.
