The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially opened the nomination exercise for local government elective positions, with the process running from September 3 to 24, 2025.
The Open Space Center has called on young people across the country to take advantage of the opportunity by participating either as candidates, proposers, or seconders.
According to the EC, aspiring candidates for district and division mayors or councilor seats must submit duly completed nomination forms to their respective district returning officers for verification. The forms are available on the Commission’s official website, www.ec.or.ug.
The nomination requirements include ensuring that proposers and seconders are registered voters, carrying valid national identity cards, and providing proof of payment for nomination fees.
In a statement, the Open Space Center encouraged youths to step forward and take part in shaping leadership at the grassroots.
“Young people must use this democratic process to make their voices heard,” the organization noted, while urging participants to maintain peace throughout the exercise.
The nomination window is expected to attract candidates from across the political spectrum as the countdown to the 2026 elections gathers pace.
