Uganda Christian University (UCU) reaffirmed its continental basketball supremacy after both its men’s and women’s teams clinched the 2025 AfroVarsity 3×3 Basketball Championship titles in Kampala.

The UCU Lady Canons and UCU Canons defeated Kenya’s United States International University (USIU) in the finals held at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, from June 7–8.

The two-day tournament, hosted by Makerere University and organized by the Federation of African University Sports (FASU), featured top university teams from across Africa.

In the women’s final, the UCU Lady Canons secured a 19–15 victory over USIU. The men’s team, the UCU Canons, won 21–19 in a tightly contested showdown.

As champions, UCU earned the right to represent Africa at the 2025 FISU 3×3 World University Cup in China. The university also qualified for the last edition of the same global tournament after defeating the University of Gold Coast in the finals held in Xiamen, China.

The Lady Canons team included captain Tracy Namugosa, Sylvia Nantongo, Shakira Nanvubya, and Bridget Aber. The Canons were represented by captain Daniel Muganzi, Joel Kayiira, Flore Dushime, and Amara Ariho.

To reach the finals, the Canons overcame the University of Rwanda 21–19 in a dramatic semifinal that ended with 2:31 on the clock. The Lady Canons advanced after beating Ivory Coast’s AS INJS 20–17.

The AfroVarsity Championship attracted university teams from across the continent, including the American University in Cairo (Egypt), University of Ibadan (Nigeria), Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny (Ivory Coast), University of Rwanda, Kampala University–Tanzania, Uganda Martyrs University, and Nkumba University.

In addition to their basketball triumph, UCU also claimed victory in badminton. The UCU Kites emerged champions of the FASU Badminton Games held concurrently at Makerere University’s Nkrumah Hall. The team—Kruthum Nalumansi, team captain Sarah Mirembe, Joshua Ekochu, and Akram Kamoga—won across Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles categories.
