Kampala International University (KIU) has inducted its newly elected 21st Guild Union leaders in a leadership seminar aimed at equipping them with skills in governance, accountability, and time management.
The induction, held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at the university’s Main Campus, brought together top university officials and former guild leaders to mentor the student leaders for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Prof. Muhammed Ngoma, Vice Chancellor, congratulated the student leaders on their election and emphasized the role of training in shaping effective leadership.
“Do what you think good leaders are doing or have done well, and avoid what they did not do well,” Prof. Ngoma said. He underscored the importance of confidence, intelligence, and responsibility in leadership. “Whoever has the ability to get people out of a crisis is the leader,” he added.
Ambrose Kibuuka, a Member of the University Council, challenged the leaders to treat their term as a stepping stone to professional success. “Leaders do not sleepwalk through life; they have laser-sharp eyes that watch out for opportunities and seize them,” he said. He also urged them to manage emotions, warning, “You are not punished for your anger but rather by your anger.”
Christine Ainebyoona, Deputy University Secretary and Campus Administrator, stressed discipline and transparency. “Follow protocol and fully account for resources availed to you. If you can handle your current position well, you can be trusted with bigger offices,” she said.

Prof. Arthur Sunday, a University Board Member, walked the leaders through the university’s governance structure and delivered a message of congratulations from Al-Hajj Dr. Hassan Basajjabalaba, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He urged the leaders to understand the roles of the Council, Senate, and Disciplinary Committee to better navigate their duties.
Dr. Jacob Eneji Ashibi, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, advised the guild leaders to balance academics and leadership using time management tools. “Time is a very valuable resource, so you must use it well. Allocate time to study, take part in engagements, and serve as a leader,” he said.
Dr. Irene Muriithi Wanjiru, Director of Quality Assurance, reminded the student leaders of their ambassadorial role. “As leaders, you are ambassadors of the university, and your actions should reflect our commitment to excellence,” she said. She also encouraged them to seek help when in doubt and to pray for wisdom.
Former Guild Presidents Yvonne Keinembabazi and Godfrey Agaba encouraged the new leaders to implement meaningful policies within their one-year term.

Robinson Ogwang, former MUBS Guild President (2020/2021), emphasized bridging the gap between students and administration. “Prepare for life after leadership by building skills, networks, and a strong professional profile that will take you to greater heights,” he said.
Shakiro Iliku, Dean of Student Affairs, closed the seminar by urging the leaders to be flexible and available to serve whenever called upon.
Other officials present included Charity Nimusiima, Deputy Campus Administrator; Boaz Tumuhimbise, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs; and Dr. Niam Ali Bechir Tadjadine, Deputy Dean for International Students.
