Busoga University is drawing lessons from Kabale University as it prepares for its transition into Uganda’s 11th public university.
Led by interim Vice Chancellor Professor John Tabuti, a delegation from Busoga University visited Kabale University for a benchmarking exercise focused on institutional transformation and staff development.
Kabale University’s Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs, Professor Johnny Mugisha, and University Secretary Canon Munono Baryantuma received the visiting team.
“It is a great honor to receive visitors of your stature,” said Prof. Mugisha, emphasizing the need for collaboration among universities.
During the visit, the Busoga team explored Kabale’s strategies for staff engagement and retention, navigating institutional change, and promoting a positive organizational mindset. The benchmarking also covered lessons from Kabale’s transition from a private to a public university, including human resource practices and staff development.

Professor Tabuti shared the background of Busoga University, which was founded in 1999 by the Church of Uganda (Busoga Diocese), and acknowledged the challenges that stalled its growth.
He said a government task force was formed in 2019 to oversee the university’s transformation into a public institution.
“We are in the advanced stages of becoming Uganda’s 11th public university,” Prof. Tabuti confirmed.
The Busoga team expressed appreciation for Kabale University’s openness in sharing their experience.
Prof. Emurwon, a member of the delegation, noted that the collaborative spirit between the two institutions was critical to mutual progress.
In his closing remarks, Prof. Mugisha stressed the importance of unity within the higher education sector.
“We need to work towards complementing each other,” he said.
Both institutions expressed hope for continued collaboration and knowledge-sharing beyond the visit.
