As part of the annual Students’ induction process, the Office of the Academic Registrar makes arrangements for freshers to meet and be addressed by members of the University Administration, Student welfare staff and the Guild Cabinet.

On 18th August 2014, thousands of freshers gathered in the Makerere University Freedom Square for a brief meeting with the aforementioned Staff and the Chief Security Officer.

The briefing was conducted by University members of staff who included the Dean of Students, Mr. Cyriaco Kabagambe, Academic Registrar Mr. Alfred Masikye-Namoah, the Director University Health Services Dr. Jane Bosa, Director Counseling and Guidance Centre, Mr. Henry Nsubuga, the Senior Sports Tutor Mrs. Penninah. A. Kabenge, A representative of the University Bursar, The Chief Security Officer/OC, Makerere ASP Mucunguzi Jackson, the Guild President H.E. Bwowe Ivan and his cabinet, and Wardens from the various Halls of Residence.

During the course of the briefing, students were introduced to key facilities as well as well as other important aspects of life at the University.

Cyriaco Kabagambe urged the students to take their studies seriously. He also encouraged students to engage in other productive activities in order to maximally benefit from their stay.

“We have so many activities going on at this institution, which include; sports, research and innovations, and religious activities. So many students have greatly benefited from these activities and I therefore implore you to fully utilize them,” the Dean encouraged.

According to the Academic Registrar Mr. Alfred Masikye-Namoah, the role of the University is to accord the basic possible tools and resources to help the student succeed. However the students are expected to work hard, be conscientious and accept responsibility for their own learning and progress.

“We want you to extract as much knowledge and skills as you can from your programme and social networks, so that as to leave the gates of Makerere University, you are well prepared and motivated to achieve real success in your chosen career,” the Academic Registrar said.

Students were also warned against conmen, fortune tellers, and engaging in unlawful activities and criminal acts. According to ASP Mucunguzi Jackson, students should carefully read the rules and regulations, to avoid being culprits.

“Security begins with you, be the police first before a policeman comes to your help,” said the Chief Security Officer.

The Makerere Guild President, H.E. Bwowe Ivan advised students to generously contribute to the enhancement of the University’s pedigree, and jealously guard its revered reputation.

“And this can be through ardent adherence to your academic demands and responding in earnest to any University activities that may require your participation from time to time,” the Guild President said.

The 2014/15 Orientation Week for First Year Students ran from 18th to 22nd August 2014. During this week freshers were expected to acquaint themselves with key facilities of the university like the Library, the University Hospital, Games and Sports Recreation facilities as well as with the general campus lay out.
